Unceded Airwaves Episode December 7, 2016
S2E9 - Call In/ Call Out, Storytelling
1:04pm - 2:08pm
This week we wanted to have some fun with storytelling! This week's show is a call in/ call out style show, where we talk about the importance of storytelling for Indigenous cultures. We chat with Jennifer Sampson who shares a story about how her brother told her all the Christmas presents were for her on Christmas morning. Bernadette McNabb shares insight into the beauty of children's imagination, and how the best gifts are not battery operated. Lastly, Blake Desjarlais shares a story about how he tried to feed Santa's reindeer on the Fishing Lake Metis Settlement in northern Alberta. Josh Kioke and Lisa Girbav reach out to Justin Trudeau's office to try to have a discussion about his recent actions regarding the approval of the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion.
We hear a fresh playlist, picked by our new music programmer Hannah Leung, featuring Silver Jackson, Supaman and Iskwe. We touch on two #UncededEvents - including the Geminid meteor shower, which is expected to peak December 13th, and the Musqueam Holiday Craft Fair December 11th.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to today's show including Mario Parent, Nikita Day, Hannah Leung, Josh Kioke, and Lisa Girbav. Thank you to Jennifer Sampson, Bernadette McNabb and Blake Desjarlais for sharing their stories with us. Unceded Airwaves on CiTR 101.9FM broadcasts from the traditional ancestral and unceded lands of the Musqueam people. This show is put together every week by UBC's Indigenous Radio Collective, and we are committed to centering the voices of Native people and offering alternative narratives that empower Native people and their stories.
