Unceded Airwaves Episode November 9, 2015
Episode one: Oh Canada? Indigenous Veterans
11:01am - 11:59am
This is the inaugural episode of the Indigenous Collective's show, Unceded Airwaves. Hosts Salia Joseph of the Squamish and Sam Nock of the Metis nation discuss some of the hidden histories and stories about Indigenous war veterans in Canada. They discuss the stories they came across about what it meant to go away to war alongside a country that didn't recognize their rights. They looked at stories from veterans who discuss going to war as sovereign nations to protect their ancestral and traditional territories. They take into account these stories and histories and endeavour to think about the implications of the poppy and what remembrance day means to them as Indigenous women.
In addition to the discussion of veterans, they overview the events that took place during Prime Minister Trudeau's swearing in ceremony that occurred on November 4th. Sam and Salia look at the implications of a new prime minister and discuss their thoughts on the Indigenous people that performed at the ceremony and the new Indigenous members of Trudeau's cabinet.
