SUJIT VAIDYA (he/him) is an independent dance artist who’s expressive dance training is in a "traditional" dance form, from India, called Bharatanatyam.
In his current engagement with his dance practice, he find ways to situate his queer experience within the rootedness of tradition and intergenerational knowledge. He's drawn to working with ideas around Body, Eroticism, Gaze, Intimacy and Stillness. He is interested in accessing slowness, subtlety and nuance in movement, in reclaiming and re- aligning gaze around virtuosity through a non- Eurocentric lens and in amplifying small moments and gestures that are curated with detailed attention to intent.
He likes to sculpt spaces for his audience's imagination to inhabit and give them agency for meaning-making. As an interpreter, he has predominantly performed as a soloist in Canada, the United States, Europe and India, has also worked with collectives and companies based in Chennai, Vancouver, Toronto, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. and has numerous productions under his belt as an emerging choreographer. He is a past recipient of the Vancouver Mayor's Award as an emerging dance artist.
His new dance film Sacred Sacrilegious is running at the SUM Gallery from Dec. 3 – 13th, check out www.sumgallery.ca for more details and you can find the Artist on Facebook at www.facebook.com/sujit.vaidya.
