Adeerya Johnson is a Dirty South Feminist from Atlanta, Georgia. She received her bachelor’s in psychology from Spelman College and a masters in African American Studies at Georgia State University. Adeerya is currently a Ph.D. student at the Institute for Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice at the University of British Columbia. Adeerya’s research interests include hip-hop feminism, southern hip-hop cultures, Black popular culture, critical race theory, and gentrification. Her work aims to offer contemporary perspectives of hip-hop feminism, Black identity in the American south through her theory Dirty South Feminism. Specifically her research explores various forms of representation of Black women and femmes from the south who are invested in southern hip-hop culture through a pop cultural lens that can be contributed to nuanced perceptions of Black feminism, Black sexuality, identity and sexual agency.
