Black Land Back
6:00pm - 6:16pm
From the Japanese-American Claims Act in 1948 to Ta-Nehisi Coates’s 2014 article “The Case for Reparations,” the United States has long struggled with the concept of repairing the damage done unto its own citizens. Yet, land ownership—as in, the literal physical space our bodies occupy—is often not discussed in consideration of reparations. Last year, the state of California saw one of the first cases in US history where property seized from a Black family was returned to its descendants. Deon talks to activist Kavon Ward about her work in restoring Bruce’s Beach back to its family and other implications of addressing Black land theft across the country.
