In the spring of 2017, the First Nations and Indigenous Studies program at UBC partnered with CiTR and successfully applied for funding from UBC’s Equity Enhancement Fund to support the creation of an Indigenous Media Collective at CiTR. The Indigenous Media Collective Coordinator will work to increase the representation of Indigenous peoples in the media landscape at both UBC and in the Lower Mainland by supporting Indigenous and allied students through a variety of multimedia initiatives.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
● Help support Indigenous and allied students in the creation of a weekly radio program from September-April that contends with key issues and questions in Indigenous Studies
● Alongside CiTR staff, help oversee the creation of of 10-12 30 minute radio documentaries focused on Indigenous topics for broadcast and dissemination through the CiTR, FNIS and CIS websites
● Help support Indigenous and allied students in the creation of a monthly column for Discorder Magazine on Indigenous topics
● Help support Indigenous and allied students in the creation of 2-3 pieces for CiTR and Discorder Magazine’s website
● Help with community and campus outreach
● Aid in the provision of training and skill development for Indigenous and allied students interested in broadcasting, audio production, written journalism and new media
● Work with CiTR and Discorder staff to create and disseminate recruitment and promotional materials for the media collective
● Work with CiTR and Discorder staff to develop a structure for collectively-created media
● Aid in the organization of workshops for the Lower Mainland and UBC community addressing issues and developing skills pertinent to the collective
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will be motivated, creative and organized. Experience and involvement with Indigenous student groups or community organizations is an asset. The successful candidate will have experience or interest in broadcasting, online and print journalism, conducting research, interviewing and working with volunteers. A proven ability to work with diverse communities is an asset.
Terms of Employment:
This is an eight month contract position funded by UBC’s Equity Enhancement Fund. It will run from September 1, 2017 to April 30, 2018. The position is 15 hours/week with a wage of $16.41/hour.
