“A Mostly Empty Mall– A Randophonic Excursion

Last year, we took a long slow walk through a mostly empty mall. This year, we returned but found the mall now entirely abandoned yet crowded with various ghosts and echoes of that golden age when men were close to the gods and everything you wanted was an easy ten minute drive from home, sometimes at half price.

Randophonic normally airs on CiTR every Saturday night into Sunday morning (11pm–2am).

gak has blessed/cursed the airwaves on CITR for over 17 years in the Monday early evening slot. Most know it primarily as Exploding Head Movies (7-9pm), devoted to soundtracks and other flights of fancy. Occasionally noisy and full of variety.

“Version-49 [inside MIX]” – An LSD49 Exploration

A one hour mix comprised of excerpts and fragments and sidetracks from the soundtrack to the movie known as Version 49, which itself represents a prolonged dive through the complex to the point of impenetrable backstory of the free form multimedia performance combo once known as LSD49 (and maybe they still are). Chalk it all up to confusion, way too many angles … and versions.

Chelidon Frame + The Asynchronous Drone Orchestra

The Asynchronous Drone Orchestra is a remote collaborative project by Chelidon Frame where different electronic musicians (Elnath Project, Giona Vinti, Marco Bordini, Rikard Fvs, Lehel P., Andrea di Giorgio, and Remo de Vico) are asked to share one (or more) ten minutes sound – be it a drone, a field recording, or a more elaborate soundscape – following a minimal set of rules.

All those fragments and noises are then mixed and combined in a long and coherent track, resulting in a choral soundscape where the result is bigger than the sum of its parts.

“Cold Piano” –A Randophonic Imagining

Completely concerned with a lonely old piano we know. It’s bleak midwinter and the building is closed, the heat turned off., the piano alone and forgotten. This is probably what it feels like.

Randophonic normally airs on CiTR every Saturday night into Sunday morning (11pm – 2am).

Absolute Value of Noise “Music For Magnolias” – An Outdoor Solar Powered Sound Work

Eight solar powered Spots hang in a magnolia tree. As the sun moves across the sky, it shines through the leaf coverage and produces a dappled light effect on the solar cells. This causes the solar power for Spot to fade in and out. Little 8-bit custom made synthesizers react to the light and play with different sounds and signal strengths at different times of the day and in different weather conditions.

Absolute Value of Noise “Music For Magnolias” – An Outdoor Solar Powered Sound Work

Music For Magnolias” uses custom made 8-bit synthesizer chips. Each one is programmed by the artist to make a set of simple sounds. The programmatic nature of the sounds is reminiscent of works by Brian Eno (who also uses custom programmed sounds in many of his works). This style of creating synthetic sounds from raw waveforms via coding instead of via keyboard + sequencer + patchcords, has a certain feel or style to it that is distinctive and peculiar. Sometimes it feels very musical; sometimes it is reminiscent of an eccentric car alarm.
