8:00am - 10:00am
JODY BISSETT (she/her) lives in Daajing Giids on Haida Gwaii off the north coast of B.C. She has worked for Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, National Marine Conservation Area Reserve, and Haida Heritage Site since 2006.
As part of the Visitor Experience team, Jody leads walks, talks and a team of interpreters who educate visitors and locals alike about the living Haida culture and globally important species and ecosystems of Gwaii Haanas.
The Vancouver Maritime Museum has partnered with Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, National Marine Conservation Area Reserve, and Haida Heritage Site for a special exhibit Mysteries of the Deep which is currently featured at the Vancouver Maritime Museum until February 2025.
The exhibit is a great way for people to learn more about the rich maritime history in the Pacific Northwest and the land-sea-people connections of Gwaii Haanas and to discover the wildlife that inhabits these areas. Including the story of the beaked whale that washed ashore on the island of SG?ang Gwaay in 2015. The island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Haida Heritage Site, where ancient monumental poles still stand.
After the 14-foot-long, 600- pound male whale washed up, the carcass was retrieved, and a necropsy performed where the whale was preserved and articulated and is now on display at the Vancouver Maritime Museum as part of this latest exhibition. Jody joins QueerFM to educate us on it’s amazing story. Learn more about the exhibit at @vanmaritime or the lands at parks.canada.ca/pn-np/bc/gwaiihaanas
