Now in its third annual year, Re-Centering/Margin: Creative Residency has impacted 33 emerging dance artists in its residency and ancillary program - including numerous selected artists, 25 mentors and 9 writers.

Re - Centering/ Margins: Creative Residency provides opportunities and professional development for three emerging dance artists of colour to continue their creative processes and create contemporary performance works. All applicants receive an artist fee, mentorship, professional development, access to free studio space with showcase opportunities for their in-process dance works.

Each of these emerging artists are asked to invite established artists to mentor them with creative feedback, and were also asked to invite a writer of colour to accompany their creative process. Writers were asked to connect with the artists' creative processes, to create essays that support different kinds of reflection, as well as creative engagement and documentation of these new dance works.

Sidney Chuckas (he/they) was born in Evanston, Illinois and has been dancing since the age of five. He learns, creates and educates through his multidisciplinary art practices with a larger mission to dismantle the institutionalized marginalization of minoritized bodies.
He has performed works of renowned choreographers such as William Forsythe, Jiri Kylian, Ohad Naharin, and Barak Marshall, danced for Brandy, Chance the Rapper, and Paris Jackson, trained with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Alvin Ailey, and The Joffrey Ballet, and has also created his own works for stage and screen.
Sidney is thrilled and honoured to be a part of the Re-Centering Margins residency and looks forward to sharing his passion, his dream and his story.

Mohammed Rashead (he/him): As a first-generation Canadian from Syria, performing has always been an outlet for Mohammed. Mohammed started dancing at the late age of nine, and, after joining schooling joined Team Canada, training in Jazz, Contemporary and Hip Hop and competing at the International Dance competition in Italy. Moving out West, Mohammed worked as a choreographer and dance teacher before landing in Vancouver.

Now training in his acting career at local studios and working in the film industry on shows such as Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist (Mandy Moore, Jillian Meyers), Riverdale (Heather Laura Grey), and more.
