Queer FM Episode November 9, 2021
QueerFM featured guest: Cast of 'Sort Of' New CBC TV series/Shugarboy local music producer/fashion designer
8:00am - 10:00am
We welcome to the show a number of cast members from the CBC TV / HBO MAX series SORT OF: BILAL BAIG (they/them) who plays SABI (and is the Co-creator, co-writer, co-executive producer, and lead performer) Amanda Cordner (they/them/she/her) who plays 7even, and Cassandra James (she/her) who plays Olympia.
Sort Of is a groundbreaking new CBC and HBO Max original series that follows a gender-fluid millennial South Asian character named "Sabi" who straddles various identities from the bartender at a queer bookstore/bar, to the youngest child in a large Pakistani family, to the de facto parent of a downtown Toronto hipster family. A coming-of-age story, the series exposes the labels we once poured ourselves into as no longer applicable...to anyone.
The series unapologetically represents and pushes against the walls of underrepresentation on TV to create space for queer people of South Asian, Muslim backgrounds; and of colour across North America and beyond.
Bilal will make queer-story by becoming the first queer (trans-feminine) South Asian and Muslim performer in Canada to be cast in the lead role of a primetime TV series — not to mention, starring as one of the first non-binary lead characters on North American "mainstream/network" TV.
Sort Of is a CBC and HBO Max original series; and airs in Canada on CBC TV and is available to stream on CBC Gem, CBC’s streaming service.
